INANOGUMI CO., LTD. is hiring a Railway Vehicle Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance Engineer. What you studied at university — electrical, mechanical or railway engineering — is what you will use every day on the production floor of Japan's rolling stock manufacturers.
Railway Vehicle Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
Full-time, permanent employment contract
Openings: 4
Graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical, electronic, mechanical, railway or related engineering fields. Students expecting to graduate may also apply.
Japanese: enough to hold an everyday conversation. A JLPT certificate is not required.
This position is offered under the "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" status of residence. The company handles and supports the application.
We support the application process.
Approval is determined by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
You will build the electrical systems of railway vehicles from design drawings, and keep them in sound condition afterwards. The role consists of these three duties:
You will be stationed at the premises of a Japanese rolling stock manufacturer, as part of an INANOGUMI team. You are never placed on site alone. You will be assigned to either our Niigata office (Akiha-ku, Niigata City) or our Yokohama office (Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama); we decide together after hearing your preference.
| Electrical / Electronic Engineering | Reading circuit and wiring diagrams; insulation and continuity → wiring and termination, repair |
|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics | Understanding mechanisms, fastening and assembly, measurement → maintenance and inspection, repair |
| Railway Engineering / Rolling Stock | Vehicle configuration and equipment layout → wiring and termination, maintenance and inspection |
| Control / Instrumentation | Inspection procedures and interpreting measured values → maintenance, inspection and identification of defects |
What we look for: reading drawings accurately, keeping records, following safety rules, and working as part of a team. The relevance of your field of study to these duties is a key part of our selection.
The electrical and mechanical knowledge you gained at university feeds directly into daily judgement. Reading drawings and understanding circuits is a prerequisite, not an extra.
We work with J-TREC, Kinki Sharyo, Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing and Niigata Transys — on Shinkansen, limited express and commuter trains alike.
This is a hire for the long term, with pay reviews, bonuses and a retirement benefit plan. We expect you to renew your status of residence and build a career here.
Engineers from Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are on our staff. We know what the first months in Japan actually require.

Application to change your status of residence (from "Student" or your current status) Everything is handled at the Immigration Services Agency — no embassy visa application is needed, and it takes less time than applying from abroad. This position is offered under the "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services" status of residence. The company supports the application process in full, but approval is determined by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. We cannot promise the outcome.
This is the support we provide for people coming from abroad. If you already live in Japan, we are glad to help with housing and settling in as well.
The company arranges your housing and goes with you to sign the contract. Approximately ¥45,000 per month is deducted from your salary toward the rent. You do not need to find a place or arrange a guarantor yourself.
A colleague goes with you for your residence card, city hall registration, My Number, social insurance enrolment, opening a bank account and getting a phone.
Shopping, transport and finding a doctor — your colleagues will show you how it works here.
Colleagues from Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are already on our staff — people who have been through exactly what you are about to go through.
What we ask for is enough Japanese to hold an everyday conversation. A JLPT certificate is not required, and your reading and writing do not need to be perfect.
What you need first on site is not everyday conversation but the vocabulary of the work: terms on drawings and specifications, safety instructions and call-outs, the morning briefing, and reporting before and after a task. It is a limited set of words that comes up again and again. Start there and you will be fine.
This is a permanent, full-time hire: we expect you to renew your status of residence and stay with us for the long term. Renewal, too, is subject to examination by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
Overtime is paid separately.
| Pay review & bonuses | Pay review once a year (July). Bonuses twice a year (June and December), depending on company performance. |
|---|---|
| Working hours | 163 hours per month on average. There is overtime during busy periods. There is no night work and no shift rotation. |
| Holidays | 121 days per year |
| Travel to Japan | The company covers your travel costs. |
| Housing | The company arranges your housing. Approximately ¥45,000 per month is deducted from your salary toward the rent. You do not need to find a place or arrange a guarantor yourself. |
| Benefits | Full social insurance (employment, workers' accident, health, pension), annual health check, work clothing provided |
| Openings | 4 positions |
