JOB DESCRIPTION

Wiring and termination work on railway rolling stock, based on design drawings

You will build the electrical systems of railway vehicles from design drawings, and keep them in sound condition afterwards. The role consists of these three duties:

  • Wiring and termination work on railway rolling stock (electrical outfitting based on design drawings)
  • Scheduled maintenance, inspection, and identification of defects
  • Repair work arising from the above

You will be stationed at the premises of a Japanese rolling stock manufacturer, as part of an INANOGUMI team. You are never placed on site alone. You will be assigned to either our Niigata office (Akiha-ku, Niigata City) or our Yokohama office (Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama); we decide together after hearing your preference.

YOUR MAJOR

How your degree maps to the work

Electrical / Electronic EngineeringReading circuit and wiring diagrams; insulation and continuity → wiring and termination, repair
Mechanical Engineering / MechatronicsUnderstanding mechanisms, fastening and assembly, measurement → maintenance and inspection, repair
Railway Engineering / Rolling StockVehicle configuration and equipment layout → wiring and termination, maintenance and inspection
Control / InstrumentationInspection procedures and interpreting measured values → maintenance, inspection and identification of defects

What we look for: reading drawings accurately, keeping records, following safety rules, and working as part of a team. The relevance of your field of study to these duties is a key part of our selection.

WHY INANOGUMI

Working here as an engineer

01

A specialist field: electrical outfitting from design drawings

The electrical and mechanical knowledge you gained at university feeds directly into daily judgement. Reading drawings and understanding circuits is a prerequisite, not an extra.

02

The production floors of Japan's major manufacturers

We work with J-TREC, Kinki Sharyo, Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing and Niigata Transys — on Shinkansen, limited express and commuter trains alike.

03

Permanent, full-time employment

This is a hire for the long term, with pay reviews, bonuses and a retirement benefit plan. We expect you to renew your status of residence and build a career here.

04

A team that has done this before

Engineers from Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are on our staff. We know what the first months in Japan actually require.

LIFE IN JAPAN

From arrival to your first day at work

This is the support we provide for people coming from abroad. If you already live in Japan, we are glad to help with housing and settling in as well.

01

Housing

The company arranges your housing and goes with you to sign the contract. Approximately ¥45,000 per month is deducted from your salary toward the rent. You do not need to find a place or arrange a guarantor yourself.

02

Paperwork after arrival

A colleague goes with you for your residence card, city hall registration, My Number, social insurance enrolment, opening a bank account and getting a phone.

03

Settling in

Shopping, transport and finding a doctor — your colleagues will show you how it works here.

04

Someone to ask

Colleagues from Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines are already on our staff — people who have been through exactly what you are about to go through.

About Japanese

What we ask for is enough Japanese to hold an everyday conversation. A JLPT certificate is not required, and your reading and writing do not need to be perfect.

What you need first on site is not everyday conversation but the vocabulary of the work: terms on drawings and specifications, safety instructions and call-outs, the morning briefing, and reporting before and after a task. It is a limited set of words that comes up again and again. Start there and you will be fine.

CAREER PATH

Your first five years

YEAR 1
Paired with a senior colleague, you learn to read the drawings and master the fundamentals of wiring and termination
YEARS 2–3
You take on scheduled maintenance and inspection, identifying defects and carrying out repairs on your own

The company supports work-related certifications and covers the cost of obtaining them

This is a permanent, full-time hire: we expect you to renew your status of residence and stay with us for the long term. Renewal, too, is subject to examination by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which fields of study can apply?
A bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, railway engineering, or control and instrumentation. Under this status of residence, the relevance between your field of study and the duties matters, so a related major is required.
How much Japanese do I need to apply?
Enough to hold an everyday conversation is sufficient to apply. A JLPT certificate is not required, and your reading and writing do not need to be perfect. After joining, you will start with the vocabulary used in the work itself.
Who handles the immigration procedure, and what does it cost?
The company files the Certificate of Eligibility application and tells you which documents are needed. You then apply for the visa yourself at the Japanese embassy or consulate, with our support on the paperwork. The company covers your travel costs to Japan.
Please note that approval is determined by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan; we cannot promise the outcome.
What about housing?
The company arranges your housing and goes with you to sign the contract, so you do not need to find a place or arrange a guarantor yourself. Approximately ¥45,000 per month is deducted from your salary toward the rent.
Can my family come with me?
There is a separate "Dependent" status of residence for family members of people working under this status. Whether it applies depends on your individual circumstances, so please raise it at the interview. This too is subject to examination by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
Do I need to travel to Japan for the selection process?
No. Interviews are held online. You only travel once your status of residence has been approved and you are joining us.
Can I apply before I graduate?
Yes. Students expecting to graduate are welcome to apply. Start dates are flexible: we agree on one with you once your status of residence has been approved, and we can work around your graduation.
My university would like to recommend a student. Who do we contact?
There is a separate contact point for university and careers-office staff, apart from individual applications. Please see this section.
When should I send my diploma and academic transcript?
We will ask for the necessary documents individually at the interview stage. Please do not send any documents through the form on this page.
